The Northern Dales include Teesdale (at the northern boundary of the Yorkshire Dales region, Weardale, the Tyne valley and the Northumberland National Park.
The area is bordered to the south by the Yorkshire Dales, to the east by the Eden Valley, to the north by Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Border Country, and to the east by the industrial conurbations of Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham and Teeside.
Attractions in the Northern Dales include the spectacular waterfalls of Cauldron Snout, Low Force and High Force in Teesdale, the glacial corrie of High Cup Nick near Dufton, and (perhaps somewhat unusually) the ski slopes of Yad Moss near Alston.
The Pennine Way passes through the Northern Dales en-route to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland.
